Abstract

Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the interest of grid operators in the application of vacuum technology in high and highest voltage overhead grids. For many years vacuum circuit breakers have been used in medium voltage grids, but in the past years mainly due to environmental conditions, vacuum technology has been developed also for high and highest voltages. Application of vacuum circuit breakers in high and highest voltage grids requires considering many technical factors that are characterized in this paper. Its main aim is to review the existing solutions of high voltage vacuum circuit breakers and to compare them with SF6 gas circuit breakers. It also discusses technical aspects of high voltage vacuum circuit breakers’ disadvantages and advantages, as well problems of their designing.
