Abstract

Improvement of grid operation reliability and efficiency is one of the main challenges faced by Distribution System Operators (DSO). The quality regulation implemented in 2015 by the URE Energy Regulatory Office sets goals for the DSO to reduce the SAIDI and SAIFI grid failure indices. Implementation of new engineering solutions in the Smart Grids domain, i.e. advanced systems for MV and LV grids monitoring as well as smart AMI metering, provides new data on the operational grid performance. This enables the development of new functionalities that introduce a new quality in the distribution grid management. This paper describes ENERGA-OPERATOR SA’s activities completed as part of the Upgrid demonstration project, aimed at increasing the level of MV and LV grids’ observability and control in the demonstration area. The grid and IT solutions employed in the project are described, as well as the AMI application options to improve the grid performance. The applied solutions ‘s impact on the distribution grid management’s mode and effectiveness is also discussed.
