Abstract

World Water Day was established in 1992 at the United Nations conference – Environment and Development. It was approved to be held every year on 22 March under the heading, theme selected for a given year. The purpose of WWD was to draw the attention of societies, politicians and decision-makers to the fact that water is essential for life and for conducting economic and social activity. The first WWD was held in 1994 under the theme: Caring for our Water Resources is Everybody’s Business. For the subsequent 20 years, the WWD has been held under headings closely related to water and use of water resources. In 2014, the WWD subject has been extended by the issue of energy. It results from the fact that energy – just like water – is a factor essential for global economic and social development. Moreover, both these areas (water and energy) are strictly related to each other and are interdependent.
