An Nonconventional Power Swing Blocking Solution for Power Unit’s Under-impedance Protections

Abstract







The paper discusses the problem of malfunctioning of under-impedance protections of power units and conventional power swing blocking solutions for these protections during power swings. Typical solutions of under-impedance protection (21g) and distance protection (21s) of generating units and of power swing blocking for these protections are presented. Some most likely situations of the development of asynchronous power swings are identified, which may lead to malfunction of conventional power swing blocking, and – consequently – to unnecessary activation of the power unit protections. In view of this hazard the article proposes an unconventional power swing blocking solution designed for the under-impedance protections, and presents example results of its operation’s simulation.
